The annual Heart of England Inter-Club Petanque Competition took place last weekend at Castle Farm Kenilworth, with seven clubs within the Heart of England, including teams from Stockton, Coventry, Whitnash, Staffs, Kenilworth, Solihull and Hereford competing for the title.
The format of the competition was a Round Robin , where each Club entered three triples teams, ranking 1 to 3 and competed against the equivalent ranked team from each Club. During the final round of the day, Hereford had already won 11 games out of a possible 18, and Whitnash Windmill Petanque Club were banking on a final win to equal Hereford’s total. Whitnash Team 2 comprising David and Lynn Roberts and Brenda Sparkes were competing against Nomades (Kenilworth) team of Geoff Phillips, Ben Alexander and Aimee Colley and a victory for the Whitnash team ensured an equal number of wins with Hereford. Whitnash Team 1 comprised Glen Woodward, Hannah Griffin and Carol Woodward, Team 2 players were Lynn and David Roberts and Brenda Sparkes and both teams won 4 out of 6 games on the day. Whitnash Team 3 players were Ross Woodward, Neil Muddeman and Rachel Stangoe who won three out of six matches. With eleven wins for both Hereford Petanque Club and Whitnash Windmill Petanque Club, it was now down to a points difference to establish the overall winners.
The Whitnash players were delighted when it was announced that they had won the championship with a greater points difference than Hereford, to become the title winners for 2018 and Glen Woodward received the trophy from Heart of England President Richard Powell on behalf of the Club.
On Sunday 22nd April Whitnash Windmill Petanque Club is organising their annual Spring Triples Event at their ground at Whitnash Sports & Social Club, where around 100 petanque players, including some of the best players in the country, and three teams from Whitnash’s French twin town, will be competing and spectators are welcome to come along to watch this fascinating sport.
